Information Processing
Media can influence many areas of a student’s life. In particular, it changes how students process information. Redmond (2015) asserts that learners have the ability to effortlessly find information. However, they lack skills to thoroughly process the information. Often, students simply believe any available and accessible information.
Moreover, Information processing habits has also changed. Students are more able to choose what information to inquiry and where this information can be found. This autonomy can negatively influence a student. For example, instead of considering all sides of a debate, students may only search for evidence that confirms with their presumptions.
Sources of information
“Research findings have indicated that adolescents learn about the world from commercial and entertainment media texts regardless of the informational intent or validity of the text”(Redmond 2015, p.12). In some studies, they found that young learners consider television news to be the most credible source of news information (Flanagin & Metzger 2007).
Moreover, students are also dependent on information from social sources. Information is easily shared through social media. These sources of information are chosen from a pool of certain individuals. Hence, the information that students rely may only come from a very small selection of people. It is possible that the content is biased.
